History of the Gastric Band

In 1978 after the unpopularity of stomach stapling and the uncontrolled malabsorption associated with it, a Gastric Band was introduced as a form of treatment for obesity. This became one of the most popular forms for treating morbid obesity.  In 1983, Dr. Kuzmak developed an Adjustable Gastric Band that created a restricted upper stomach compartment, while still leaving a large patent distal segment of stomach in continuity.

More Improvements

In 1985 a Swedish doctor by the name of Peter Forsell, introduced a better adjustable Gastric Band.  The band was then later used successfully laparoscopically.  The newer form of Band, now known as the Laparoscopic Adjustable Silicone Gastric Banding system, does not involve any cutting, stapling, nor removal of any part of the stomach and/or intestines.   Because of this, most of the side effects and complications associated with other bariatric procedures are eliminated.

The Gastric Band Today

The Gastric Lap Band is the first and only (at this time) fully reversible and minimally disabling bariatric procedure. Today, it is the first choice for treatment of severe obesity.  While there are several types of weight loss surgeries available, Sanoviv believes that the Lap Band is the superior method to the many other older procedures being performed.  Sanoviv is a leading medical facility located  on the Baja Coast in Rosarito, Mexico.

The adjustable laparoscopic gastric banding has various benefits which make it a safer and better  method to weight loss and weight control.  Moreover, because the band is placed on the outside of the stomach restricting the amount food that is taken in, malabsorption of important nutrients is not a problem.  For more information on this procedure and to see if you are a candidate, contact Sanoviv today toll-free at 1-800-726-6848.
