What Happens During the Lap Band Procedure?

Just like the Gastric Bypass surgery, the Lap Band procedure promotes weight loss by limiting the amount of food that can be consumed all at once and increases the amount of time that is needed for the stomach to empty out.  Because of this, patients who have the Lap Band procedure performed feel fuller sooner and sustained the feeling over a longer period of time.  Unlike the Gastric Bypass however, food still passes through the lower stomach and the full length of the intestine.  As an added benefit, the procedure does not require a rerouting of the digestive tract, nor restrict the absorption of needed nutrients.

The Lap Band Procedure Itself

The Lap Band procedure requires four to six tiny incisions in the abdomen, each less than approximately ½ inch long.  It is a far less invasive approach and is known as laparoscopic surgery.  The end result is that it is less painful and leaves fewer scars.  From this point, the surgical team implants the Lap Band System by use of a narrow telescope and long, slender medical instruments.

Afterward, the inflatable silicone elastomer band is fastened around the upper part of the stomach via a locking buckle.  Tubing is then placed that connects the band to an access port so that adjustments to the band can be made, which is inserted through one of the incisions and secured beneath the skin against the muscle wall.  Additionally, the surgeon will suture the band in place in order to prevent slippage.  The procedure generally takes about an hour to complete.
