Lap Band surgery or any other type of surgery that is intended to help produce weight loss is a serious undertaking. It is important that every potential patient clearly understand what is involved with the surgery and how their “eating” lifestyle will need to change. Approved by the FDA in June of 2001, the Lap Band surgery, also known as the Adjustable Gastric Banding System is the newest form of weight loss surgery available in the United States.
Although fairly new to the Surgeons in the United States, the Lap Band Surgery has been performed since 1993, when first introduced in Europe. Since this time, more than 120,000 Lap Band procedures have been performed around the world. In Rosarito, Mexico at the Sanoviv medical facility, Dr. Corvala has 25 years of expertise in laparoscopy and was appointed by INAMED, the manufacturer of the gastric band, as the principal instructor to surgeons in the United States of the Lap Band procedure. Today, this type of weight loss surgery is available throughout the world. How Does The Lap Band Surgery Differ From Other Surgical Options? The primary difference between the Lap Band and other weight loss surgeries, is that it is reversible, and the least invasive procedure. It is a weight loss surgery whereby an inflatable silicone elastomer band is placed around the patient’s stomach. The band can then be adjusted to accommodate ones needs. While other weight loss surgeries require cutting, stapling, diversion, bypassing and stitching to achieve their effect, the Lap Band System does not. There aren’t any permanent changes made to the body's physiology. Rather, the surgeon simply wraps the band around the upper portion of the stomach in order to create a small pouch. The stomach itself stays intact and the digestive and intestines remain the same. For more information about the Lap Band procedure, please contact Sanoviv at 1-800-726-6848. |
